Other People's Kids

Did you know I am the assistant soccer coach for Jacob's kindergarten team? Well I am. Tonight we had soccer practice and while I love all eight 6 year olds there is one little boy that .... eh ... drives me crazy. Seriously, he is mischievous. He is constantly kicking the other children's soccer balls away from them. He laughs at the other kids when they make mistakes. He hogs the ball and never passes to anyone.

To be honest his parents feed into him.

The rules for kindergarten soccer is that during every game every child plays goalie. His parents argue with the coach about putting him in goal because he should be scoring goals.

Tonight I had enough. This little boy actually spit on me!! Spit on me!

His dad was standing right there and did nothing.

I told the little one that spitting on someone is disgusting and if he does that again he will not be able to play in the game on Saturday.

Then after practice was over and the kids were leaving this child kicked Jacob's ball and then kicked Jacob in the arm.

Once again his dad was standing there. This time the dad told him to apologize. This child wouldn't and didn't apologize.

Jacob and I just left.

I am disappointed in the parents. They allow him to behave this way. He doesn't have any respect for authority either.

We wonder why children behave the way they do.

So now I wonder ... if this happened to you or your child what would you do?

  1. if it was my child I would have said something to the other child like that's not nice or that is unacceptable and If your incharge of the soccer team he would sit out part of the game for bad sportsmanship and if the father said anything to me I would tell him that his son is not showing good sportsmanship and this is what happens when this sorta thing happens because it happened during the team event and if he does not lieke it he can take the kid out . that's my 2 cents!

  2. How awful! I cannot stand it when I see parents letting their kids behave so badly and actually encouraging it.

Kudos to you for not losing your temper, I'm sure it was hard!

  3. It really does sound like the parents allow him to act this way.
I do think that maybe you should have a conversation with the parents but from the sounds of how they argue about him being goalie, it might not do any good.....

count the days til you are done. And pray hard that he doesn't end up on your team at all.

Also - I don't think that making him sit out for spitting on the coach is unreasonable at all.

  4. I agree with Klynch 100%. I would make him set out everytime he acts out...really that is all you can do. If the parents don't like it they can take him somewhere else to play.

  5. I would feel like I had to talk with the parents in some sort of tactful but honest way. Kids cannot grow up thinking this is acceptable. :(

  6. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having such problems. Absolutely ridiculous. Can you imagine a classroom full of them? God bless his teacher. I used to coach youth soccer, girls- so the most that they were concerned about was their matching hair ribbons! lol. Great group of girls though. I did have problems with over the top parents yelling in my face, and that was enough for me. Hopefully his parents will get a wake up call. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Hang in there!

  7. Oh dear, that is so tough. I am not the confrontational type, but I do agree with klynch in making him sit out when he does things that are unsportsmanlike. And I would pray, pray, pray for that little boy and his family!! It's so unfair to that boy that his parents have refused to raise him right.

Oh and it's nice to meet you, by the way!!!
